The nearest airport is Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, about 32 kilometres away and about 24 minutes by car; Stuttgart Airport is about 67 kilometres away, around a 50-minute drive. Karlsruhe Palace, the point from which the city's streets fan out, is a little over a quarter of an hour's walk away. It houses the Badisches Landesmuseum, and the nostalgic Schlossgartenbahn railway runs through the palace gardens. Even closer is the Zoological City Garden, a mix of zoo and park with boat rides on the Swan Lake. On the Marktplatz stands the Pyramid, the tomb of the city's founder, Margrave Karl Wilhelm. The Botanical Garden lies right next to the palace gardens. Art lovers should head to the ZKM, housed in a former munitions factory, and in the evening Ludwigsplatz is a lively spot for dinner or a cocktail. For views across the Rhine plain, take a trip to Durlach and up the Turmberg, best at sunset. From mid-August to mid-September the Schlosslichtspiele light festival turns the palace façade into a screen in the evenings, with free entry, and in Advent the Christmas market fills the Marktplatz and Friedrichsplatz.
